Certain items cost the landfill or the recycling center extra, so they carry a surcharge: mattress or box spring +$25 each, refrigerant appliance +$40 (refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, dehumidifiers), tires +$8 each, and paint or electronics billed at disposal cost because those have to be routed to a specific county facility instead of a landfill. Charlotte residents have two legal routes: city bulky item pickup, which is appointment-only, and Mecklenburg County full-service recycling and disposal centers, open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city route requires you to schedule ahead through 311, the CLT+ app or the online service request portal, then set items at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day with about three feet between pieces and clear of carts, mailboxes and storm drains. Setting bulky items out without an appointment gets them left behind and can draw a code complaint.
The bigger catch is what the city will not take. Construction and demolition debris, electronics, paint, batteries, tires, yard waste and household hazardous waste are all excluded from bulky pickup. On top of that, multi-family properties are on private hauler contracts, so if you live in an apartment or a managed condo building anywhere from South End to Steele Creek, you get no city bulky pickup at all and your dumpster corral is not a legal place to leave a sofa.
The county centers cover the gap.
